Just two months after NASA reported it was the hottest April, and hottest January-April, in temperature record comes the news that the first six months of 2010 “breaks the thermometer.” Yes, these last six months have been the hottest January to June on record. If that’s not enough for you, the 12-month running mean global temperature has reached a new record this year.
While these findings are significant, they become more important when you factor in that these record-breaking high temperatures occurred with a minimum of solar irradiance. For NASA, this reinforces the powerful evidence of human-caused global warming, as temperatures are rising while a minimum of sunlight is reaching the Earth.
If you can believe it, there are still people who think that climate change is a myth. You might remember that these climate deniers went crazy over the winter, raging against climate change research because of harsh winter temperatures and snowstorms.
It must be tough being a climate denier. You’ve got to be able to 100% ignore the well-respected scientific community telling you that no matter how loudly you yell about snowstorms and cold days, the last twelve months have been the warmest twelve months. Ever.
An 8-against-1 match-up might seem unfair at first glance, but Rep. Bachmann can hold her own in the ring!
In the gubernatorial corner, eight out of nine GOP candidates for governor (including frontrunners Marty Seifert and Tom Emmer) said they don’t believe in human-caused climate change. The one-two punch of GOP climate change deniers might be enough to take down defending March Badness champion Michele Bachmann.
She’s not going down by knockout, though. Rep. Bachmann encouraged opponents of health care reform to “make a covenant, to slit our wrists, be blood brothers” in opposing it.
In this dramatic match-up of Pawlenty vs. Pawlenty, who will win?
In one corner we have Climate Pawlenty. Climate Pawlenty was once a champion of cap-and-trade legislation, but that was when he was a minor-leaguer. Now that Climate Pawlenty dreams of making it big in the majors (as a potential candidate for the 2012 GOP presidential nomination), he’s got to make some adjustments to his game plan.
One of adjustments this year was a complete reversal of his stance on global warming, questioning “how much of it is man-made” and accusing scientists of “data manipulation and controversy.”
In the other corner, we have a different side of Gov. Pawlenty. What could possibly compete with Climate Pawlenty? Gov. Pawlenty vetoed GAMC, the health care program that provides a safety net for Minnesota’s most vulnerable. Over 1,000 miles (he was in Washington, DC) separated Gov. Pawlenty from the poorest and sickest Minnesotans he kicked off GAMC.
Members of the Youth Climate Movement confronted infamous climate denier, Lord Monckton, after he compared climate advocates to "Hitler Youth."
While Monckton was talking to reporters, some young climate advocates quietly placed a 350.org sticker on his back. 350 -- as in parts per million, the level scientists have identified as the safe upper limit for CO2 in our atmosphere (we're at 387 right now).
Check out the video:
In October, the Minnesota Free Market Institute brought Monckton to Minnesota for an event that was heavily promoted by other right-wing groups like Minnesota Majority and the Tea Party Patriots. All the hype about Monckton lead one Minnesota Daily reader wondering "Who exactly claims that Lord Christopher Monckton is a global warming expert?"
The company he works for that gets money from ExxonMobile.
What is his diploma in again?
Journalism.
How is that a scientific background?
It is not.
Was he a science adviser to Margaret Thatcher?
No.
None of those actual facts stop GOP gubernatorial candidate Pat Anderson from promoting Monckton's lies on Facebook and Twitter. I wonder if she thinks Monckton's also right when he says climate scientists are "criminals" and climate activists are "Hitler Youth."
